Guinea Bissau was once a part of the kingdom of Gabu, as wellas part of the Mali empire. Part of this country persisteduntil 18th century while a few others were under some rule by the Portuguese Guinea .
On independence in 1973 and recodgnised in 1974 , Bissau, was added to the country's name to prevent confusion with Guinea(formerly French Guinea )
